Joan E. Mills
1940–2020
Joan Evelyn Mills passed away peacefully on September 1, 2020, at age 80. Raised in Grosse Pointe, Michigan, she spent her childhood summers in Charlevoix and raised three children in Birmingham and Bloomfield Hills. Joanie married three times before meeting her soul mate and beloved husband of thirty years, Fred McLane, with whom she went on to work as an assistant producer and writer on various film projects. She loved cards, tennis, travel, and good conversation. A lifelong learner and voracious reader, Joan was a serious student of whatever piqued her curiosity, from graphology, psychology, art, and science to Native American culture and Buddhism. A feared and respected poker player, she won countless tournaments and placed in the World Series. Her warmth, humor, and intelligence will be missed by all who knew her.
Joan was preceded in death by her parents, Frank Erbecker and Mildred Ernst Erbecker, and sister Carol Gottlieb. She is survived by her husband, Fred McLane; twin brother Frank (Maeve) Erbecker; sister Janet Mosser; children Chris (Meg) Reardon, Anne Unmacht, and Lisa Reardon (Tony Morrison); five grandchildren, BJ, Jason, Harper, Evelyn, and Molly; and one great-grandchild, Liam.
