Services for funeral E.J. "Jay" Sayers, Jr. will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, January 4, 2020 at Silver Lake Baptist Church, Hwy 80 with Pastor Mike Sullivan officiating. Viewing will be held from 11:30 a.m. -12:30 p.m., before the service. He will be laid to rest at Silver Lake Cemetery.
Eddie Joel Sayers, Jr. was born on November 17, 1936 in Talco, Texas, to Fannie Wade Starnes & Eddie Joel Sayers. He grew up in the Silver Lake Community, Van Zandt County, and attended Grand Saline High School.
Throughout his adult years, Jay liked to travel, and worked in many areas of the construction industry all over the U.S.; including operating heavy dirt moving equipment, laying tile swimming pools, creating commercial water features, and municipal water treatment plants. He also spent many years as an off-shore driller for Global Marine on drill ships around the world. It was not unusual for his sisters to receive phone calls in the “middle of the night” from him, as he was usually calling from another time zone.
In his later years, Jay moved back to the Grand Saline area, where he became reacquainted with old friends and married Paula Petrea King. Together they enjoyed visiting “the boats” in Louisiana, and farming and raising cattle. He was a Baptist.
Eddie Joel “EJ or Jay” Sayers, Jr. died peacefully after a lengthy illness in Azalea Trails Nursing Home on December 30, 2019 in Grand Saline, Texas at the age of 83.
He was preceded in death by his parents, sister Ruth Adkins of Grand Saline, and son David of Indiana.
E.J. is survived by his wife, Paula of Grand Saline; daughters, Judy of Texas and Cathy of California; siblings Florence Choate of Ft. Worth, Jo Ann Petrea (Wayne) of Mineola, & Don Sayers (Kathy) of Grand Saline, 6 grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews.
If desired, in lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to Silver Lake Cemetery Assoc. c/o Donna Hooks, 359 FM 2422, Mineola, TX 75773.
The family would like to thank Azalea Trails Nursing Home staff for their excellent care during the last few months of his life.
