James William Belcher
January 14, 1955 - January 21, 2019

James William Belcher Jr. passed away January 21, 2019 at the age of 64. James was preceded in death by his adoptive parents, James William Belcher Sr. and Ruby Cinderella Belcher, and his birth parents Calvin Lee Hughes and Dixie Caroline Hughes. He is survived by his siblings, Randel Hughes (and wife Teri), Wendy Shilling, Lori Shilling (and husband Evan), Cheryl Popp (and husband Mike) and August William Blomquist, plus many nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews.

James attended school in Overton, Texas from the 6th through 12th grades where he was affectionately known as "Belcher" by his lifelong high school friends. Among other jobs after high school, he worked for the U.S. Postal Service in Dallas, Texas. Thirteen years into his post office career, he felt a different calling to a career of a professional poker player and casino card dealer. He followed that dream to Lake Elsinore Casino and Resort in Lake Elsinore, California from 1999 to 2013 and Players Casino from 2013 to 2017 in Ventura, California. To his "poker family", he was known as "Postman". James claimed his chosen profession was not gambling, but a skill. He made several appearances in the World Series of Poker in Las Vegas. His most recent appearance was in 2018.

James had been battling prostate cancer for years. The cancer had progressed to Stage 4, but James kept fighting with chemotherapy and a lot of strength and determination. He had recently moved from California to Overton, Texas to be close to family and friends. He recently suffered a massive stroke from which he did not recover.

Besides poker, James loved eating and meeting new people. His travels made him new friends all across the country. Many of his friends said he had a great heart and that is why so many people were drawn to him. His love for people brought him much love in return.

Celebration of Life for James will be Saturday, February 2, 2019 at Bodacious Barbeque in Kilgore, TX from 9:30am-12:30pm. Snacks and drinks will be provided and you are welcome to order barbeque from the restaurant next door. If anyone has any stories they would like to share we would love to hear them. I know James had a lot of good friends, some of which we have already met and we are looking forward to meeting more. Hope you can join us.
